Making Nail Trims Easy!

Nail trims! Most owners really dislike or avoid trimming their pets toenails. Here are some important tips to success:

1- Constantly handle your pets paws in a casual way and be sure to give praise and some treats! Just holding each paw and gentlly squeezing it while petting will get your pet used to their paws handled. Do this a LOT.

2- When they are used to this, introduce the nail clipper by just having it by you and holding it while giving a treat and talking in a "high" happy voice.

3- When they accept it casually, try trimming one toenail tip on a rear paw. Just the tip, just one, only on the rear paw. Praise and treats! Handle the rest of the toes but no more trimming.

4- Continue as often as you can doing a different nail each session and going to the front paws. Praise, treats, kisses! At this point many dogs will lay down and allow this to be done, not so many cats though, lol!

5- Starting when your pet is young is excellent but this can be done at any age. Someone can hold the dog for you with collar and leash on, don't get frustrated or angry, and use proper equipment. Good quality nail clippers and styptic powder in case you cut the quick (Quik Stop is a good brand) are necessary. If you do get any bleeding, press the powder firmly against the nail. In a pinch digging the nail into a bar of soap, cornstarch or flour may work.

6- Do like the pros do and use a dremel or nail grinder to file the nails smooth for a show ring finish. Use it on low power and smooth the trimmed edge never staying too long in one spot.  You may never need to use clippers at all if you keep them filed and don't forget those dewclaws!
Good luck!
