Morehead Animal Hospital provides services for cats and dogs. The practice has been at its current location since 1992, and is staffed by David R. Bird, D.V.M. and associate veterinarians  Katie Willis,D.V.M. and Kathy Ferguson,D.V.M. along with two licensed veterinary technicians, and a support staff who use their extensive knowledge and skills to address client concerns and pet needs. Dr. Bird has provided veterinary care for clients and their pets at Morehead Animal Hospital for over 44 years.

  • Dr. David R. Bird


    Dr. David R. Bird earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.) degree from the University of Georgia, College of Veterinary Medicine in 1974. He began Morehead Animal Hospital in 1975. He was a single practitioner until January 2012. Dr. Bird has a special interest in dermatology and now travels extensively lecturing as a Key opinion leader with a major pharmaceutical company. He enjoys all areas of practice but has a particular enthusiasm for diseases of the ear, dentistry, digital radiology, soft tissue, orthopedic surgeries and performing stem cell procedures.

    He is married to Kelly, who works along side him in the practice. He is the proud father of three children and has three granddaughters; Cecelia Anne, Caroline Grace, and Wooten Grey. His daughter Kristen is also a Dr. Bird with her PhD in Clinical Psychology. His twin sons are John, who is our practice manager at Morehead Animal Hospital and Ryan, who is General Manager at Kencraft Boats and is married to Spencer Brunson who is a Clinical Research Associate at Chiltern International.

    Dr. Bird enjoys fishing, hunting, cooking, taxidermy and a variety of other outdoor hobbies especially cliff diving in Hawaii.

  • Dr. Katie Willis

    Dr. Katie H. Willis graduated from North Carolina State University in 2005 with a B.S. in Poultry Science and the University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2009.  She began her career in Greenville, NC, serving as a mixed animal veterinarian for two and half years, as well as overseeing shelter veterinary programs in Pitt County. 

     In January of 2012, she joined Morehead Animal Hospital.  Dr. Willis professional veterinary interests include canine and feline internal medicine (specifically gastrointestinal and cardiac diseases), behavior science, pain management and hospice care.  With this specific interest in internal medicine, she is excited to expand patient care with ultrasound technology.  Dr. Willis is USDA accredited, which entails specific training in zoonotic diseases and veterinary biosecurity measures.  In addition to individual patient care, Dr. Willis also has has participated with veterinary-oriented mission trips with Christian Veterinary Mission.    

     When away from the hospital, Dr. Willis enjoys spending her time with her family (daughter McKenzie,son Jim and husband Nathan),relaxing at the beach, reading and traveling to her family farm.   Her furry children are L.D. (Little Dog) and Beagle puppy Clyde-Otis!

  • Dr. Kathy Ferguson

    Dr. Kathy Ferguson graduated in 1994 from North Carolina State University with B.S. in Zoology and a concentration in Genetics and the University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1998. She began her career in Raleigh, NC working at Bayleaf Veterinary Hospital for 19 years as a companion animal veterinarian. 

    Dr. Ferguson has a particular interest in internal medicine, feline care, pain medicine, and the human-animal bond.

    She and her family have moved back to Carteret County to be closer to family (she is a Garner!). Her family includes husband Kenton and sons Brannon and Bennett. She has 3 cats (Ryder, Cheezit and B.B.) and 2 dogs; a Basset Hound Maycie and a Beagle Bella.

  • John Bird


    John became Practice Manager at Morehead Animal Hospital in January 2011 after graduating from UNC-W with a Business degree  in Operations Management.  He is a licensed real estate agent in North Carolina which has served to make him more well rounded in our community.  John is an integral part at Morehead Animal overseeing each and every aspect of day to day operations.  John is currently pursuing a program to further advance his education in Veterinary Practice Management.  It is his goal to provide our clients with top of the line service to set Morehead Animal apart from other facilities.

    John was a past chairman of Ducks Unlimited UNC-W chapter and continues to remain very active in local events. He enjoys hunting, fishing and prefers his free time to be spent outdoors. He is married to Sarah, a North Carolina real estate broker,  and has two beautiful daughters,Cecelia Anne and Caroline Grace. He owns Goose (the sweetest yellow Labrador we know), Allie Cat the Golden Retriever and a Yorkshire Terrier, Abby.

  • Jill Richardson Farley

    Jill is a 1979 graduate of Central Carolina Technical College in Sanford, North Carolina. She has an Applied Associates degree in Veterinary Medical Technology and has worked at Morehead Animal Hospital since 1988. In the past she has also worked at an animal shelter in Alexandria, Virginia and worked as an educational volunteer in the Craven County Humane Society. She has specialized interest in laboratory testing, animal behavior and in canine reproduction. She attends veterinary seminars for continuing education annually.

    Jill and her husband Earl used to have Weimaraners. Their kennel name Celebrith (pronounced kaw-LEE-brith) has a number of field titles, obedience including Utility Dog Tracking titles and to date has produced 7 AKC champions. One of their dogs, Ch. Celebrith Grand Illusion, CD earned the title BROM (Bench Register of Merit) from the Weimaraner Club of America for the achievements of her puppies. Jill now has  2 smaller dogs; a Parson Russell Terrier Bea and Russell Terrier Sookie along with a Golden Retriever named Truvy that is competing in AKC obedience and rally trials. Jill also enjoys gardening, visiting famous gardens and adores anything related to Disney. ºOº

  • Kelly W. Bird


    Kelly is married to Dr. Bird and has been with Morehead Animal Hospital since 1992.  As a licensed Veterinary Medical Technician she enjoys all aspects of the practice but has a special interest in cytology, dentistry, and surgical assisting.  Her job descriptions have changed dramatically over the years and she is now enjoying more hands on with animals and less time book keeping. She has fallen head over heels in love with her granddaughters and being a "Lolly" to Cecelia Anne, Caroline Grace and Wooten Grey.

    Kelly enjoys gardening, boating and all things Apple but especially loves tagging along with Dr. Bird on his speaking engagements when she can!  She travels with a medical mission team as often as she can through out Asia.  Kelly also graduated from Liberty University with a major in Psychology and a minor in Christian Counseling. Dr. Bird and Kelly have a house full of pets with 4 dogs (2 Jack Russells, an English Pointer and a constantly wet Labrador Retriever); Ha'Lia, Hattie, Saffy, and Otter including a cat named Beep Beep!

  • Dawn Trombley


    Dawn Trombley is our resident movie buff and front office manager.  She maintains everything coming and going and is responsible for a great deal of client education and information. She will usually be your first contact at Morehead Animal. She has over 14 years of experience in the veterinary field and during that time she has pursued basic veterinary courses at our local community college and numerous online continuing education seminars.  It is her desire to stay on top of an ever changing industry.

    Dawn is married to Michael and they have two children; a daughter Madison and a son Garrison. Her family includes a dog, Rosie and a cat, Stephen and now a new flock of chickens.

  • Linda Styron


    Linda, a longtime and dear friend, answered the call to help out temporarily while we were short staffed..... that was 7 years ago. We all were so happy we could not let her go. We are privileged to have Linda's many years of office experience answering phones and keeping our front desk in tip top shape.  She is responsible for making sure we can accommodate all your pet's needs while you are in our care.  Linda has been a client and a friend of the Birds for more than 35 years. She and her husband Lee enjoy traveling, gardening and home improvement projects including an amazing outdoor Christmas display that is worthy of a drive-by. They own Otis and Ouizer, 2 of the 6 in our staff Jack Russell family!

  • Jessica Clements

    Jessica comes to us new in the veterinary field.  She has successfully completed the Veterinary Assistant  program at Carteret Community College.  Her desire is to make veterinary medicine a career.  She plans  to pursue a Veterinary Medical Technician degree and become licensed.  Jessica maintains our kennel facility and assists our doctors during exams.   She is married to Will and mother to Sullivan and has 3 dogs; Sasha, a Cocker Spaniel, Tipper, a Chihuahua and Finley, the scruffy terrier.  They are new home owners and all that it entails.

  • Stephany Bornman

    Stephany is a certified graduate of a Veterinary Assistant course and most recently completed her Associates Degree in Science and has worked in the veterinary field for several years. We are delighted to have her with our practice. She is very active with her church as the worship leader of Sunday services and youth drama leader along with being an extremely talented vocalist. She enjoys reading, writing music along with playing the piano and guitar. She and her family have a number of pets with dogs Buster and Grumpy and Mr. Stripes the cat headlining the group.
